Fungal Nail Disease
(Onychomycosis)
Fungal nail disease causes nails to
become unsightly: thickened, brittle,
discolored, and disfigured. The disease
affects a large percentage of
population, with incidence increasing
with age, conditions which affect immune
system (such as Diabetes Mellitus), and
warm & moist environments (such as
inside of a closed shoe on a warm day).
The condition is difficult to eradicate.
Creams do not penetrate into nails,
thus, systemic (oral) medications had
been used, with the idea that the
medication - which is toxic to fungus -
will be incorporated into the nail as
the nail grows, and will poison the
fungus, resulting in a clear strip of
nail, which will replace the infected
nail as the nail grows. The problem is,
the medications used to treat fungal
disease are also toxic to humans to some
degree, and have to be taken for a
number of months. Thus, liver function
tests have to be monitored, and
treatment must be stopped if signs of
liver toxicity are detected.
It was recently discovered that
fungal nail disease can be eradicated
with help of laser therapy. Publication
in the frame below summarizes one of the
treatment protocols.
